SUPPORTS PRINEVILLE THROUGH
WELLNESS, THE ARTS AND EDUCATION
Tolstoy said that “the vocation of every man and woman is to serve other people.”
At Hanes Chiropractic Wellness Center, we take seriously this obligation to serve others and have committed to building up our community through wellness, the arts and education. That’s why we have donated thousands of dollars to local reading programs. And created beauty in our small part of the world through music sponsorships and downtown revitalization. And chartered an annual event to provide dental, vision and spinal screenings to all local children. And we’re not done yet!

“Boa constrictor, free to a good home.” When I purchased the old Little Pine Motel complex on the corner of Third and Deer Streets, I never intended to build a new office building there. Then again, I never intended for a lot of things to happen. Like the time a long-term tenant decided to use the motel phone system to orchestrate his ownership of a prostitution ring in Las Vegas. Or the time another tenant fled the country but not before leaving us a “gift” – a hungry 11-foot boa constrictor in the bathtub. You really cannot make this Stuff Up! I suspect the local police department was happy to see the demolition crew get started on the old, dilapidated motel. And of course, I couldn’t resist taking a swipe at the old place with a backhoe!

During 2003 and 2004, at great personal risk (remember the boa constrictor!), I embarked on a journey to redevelop and revitalize one of Prineville’s most visible downtown corners. It took an enormous amount of time, energy and resources, but what now stands at the corner of Third and Deer Streets is a classic, two-story brick building that I have always hoped the entire town could be proud of. Hanes Chiropractic Wellness Center is the anchor tenant, and I am proud to say that none of our fabulous, professional tenants has brought any cold-blooded pets with them. At least, not that I know of….
Oh yes, the building has won more than a few awards, thanks to our wonderful architect Scott Steele and builder Steve Keeton Construction and mason Frank Ceniga Construction. We are never alone in our success.
Before the Hanes Building, there was another little building on the corner of Third and Juniper Streets that I renovated. The hardest part was peeling 60 years’ worth of wallpaper from one of the rooms after working at the clinic all day. The best part was hearing the collective gasp of those attending the awards ceremony for the Building a Better Central Oregon award when they displayed the before and after photos. That building turned into a comfortable, peaceful space for our patients. What fun all of that was! And it paved the way for turning that end of Third Street into a professional-commercial zone with other businesses moving in over the next five years – it cleaned up another really visible corner in Prineville. And who can forget the beautiful brick walkway that new landscaper Steve Herburger installed? Despite the frequent requests to divulge the paint colors, they were a closely guarded secret!
